Earth has been abandoned

In the year 2156, a few thousand humans abandoned planet Earth. The reason why people left Earth varies with the historical narrative; all that these interstellar migrants knew was that they needed somewhere to call home. Thus, The Expansion was established to propel civilization into the next chapter of its history. In a universe where countries ceased to exist, most of humanity was unified under The Expansion, and people worked together to ensure that everybody had the essentials for survival. All efforts were overseen by the leadership of The Expansion, also known as The Board, which was composed of ten highly influential individuals.

The most obvious necessity was land. Thus, scientists and laborers worked together to terraform a small planetoid for human habitation. This planetoid was named Satus, the Latin word for Start. Vegetation was planted on Satus to ensure a steady oxygen and carbon dioxide cycle. Not only did Satus have an atmosphere thick enough to provide a greenhouse effect, the planetoid was small enough for human efforts to have a significant impact on its gas composition. The process took years longer than originally projected, but oxygen levels eventually grew. Satus became habitable by the year 2220.

After a city was built on Satus, The Board presented a question to humanity: "What if our numbers grow too large for Satus? Should we rely on such inefficient terraforming methods in the future?" Thus, a top scientist named Dr. Harold Stoichenberg and his team researched alternative methods for establishing oxygen and carbon dioxide cycles on planets. Through genetic engineering, Dr. Harold Stoichenberg and his team created the Respersects, which were a class of giant bugs. Respersects were a dream-come-true for The Board; not only did they reproduce quickly, they emitted oxygen at an exponentially faster rate than vegetation ever could. Thus, The Expansion continued with terraforming efforts to establish new land and to gather resources to bring back to Satus. All seemed to be going well for humanity.

Unfortunately, a major problem arose: The Respersects were extremely aggressive. It became immediately apparent that the containment units built for the Respersects were nowhere near durable enough to hold them. A team of biologists quickly reported the issue to The Board. In the year 2230, while The Board was "looking into it," a bloody massacre ensued in a remote lab after a one-meter-tall cockroach broke out of its cage. Ten biologists were pronounced dead, and a public outcry called for the experiments to be shut down. Despite the outrage, a promise of plentiful resources for humanity divided the public, and the experiments continue to this day.
